Our Sustainability Ethos

Sustainability sits at the heart of Seb & I. From the materials we choose to the brands we work with and the packaging we use, every decision is guided by a desire to make kinder, more conscious choices for families and the planet.

Over the years, I’ve become increasingly aware of the devastating impact climate change is having on our planet, and how our everyday actions contribute to it. It genuinely upsets me to think that my children — and their children — could grow up in a world so heavily affected by climate change, when so much of it could have been prevented.

Greed, disregard and a lack of care have too often been prioritised over our children’s future.

That said, it’s not all doom and gloom. I’m endlessly inspired by the organisations and individuals who are striving to make a difference, no matter how big or small. If that’s you — thank you, truly.

Why Seb & I Exists

During my pregnancy with Seb, I struggled to find eco-friendly, ethical products that felt genuinely considered and accessible. I wanted natural, organic essentials, minimal plastic, and transparency — and I found that surprisingly difficult.

So I decided to create a small, thoughtful haven that showcases environmentally conscious brands and small businesses who share a love for sustainability, fair trade and ethical production. Every product needed to be high quality, made to last, and chosen with intention — so it could be reused, passed on, or become lovingly pre-loved rather than discarded.

Today, I have the pleasure of working with both well-known and independent brands — many of them mum-run UK businesses — all united by a shared mission to create kinder choices for families and the planet. Our values are reflected across our collections, including thoughtfully curated gifts for mums-to-be, new mums and new babies designed to support this special chapter with care and intention.

Our Fabric Choices: Why Organic Cotton Matters

The farming of conventional cotton relies heavily on pesticides and insecticides, contributing to environmental pollution and exposing both farmers and consumers to toxic chemicals.

Organic cotton, by contrast, is grown without these harmful substances, helping to protect soil health, water systems and air quality — while also reducing health risks for those involved in production.

That said, honesty matters. Both cotton and organic cotton require significant water and energy to produce. This is why we also actively explore alternative, more sustainable fabrics — hemp being a strong contender.

A Note on Bamboo & Greenwashing

Greenwashing is something I feel very strongly about.

While bamboo as a plant has many benefits, the process required to turn bamboo into fabric is often highly chemical-intensive. Only when the Lyocell process (a closed-loop system that recycles chemicals) is used does bamboo fabric become a more responsible option.

Because cotton and bamboo are both widely used across the products we need, I’ve had to make careful decisions based on transparency and integrity. I choose not to stock brands that claim bamboo is the “ultimate eco-friendly fabric” without acknowledging its processing impact. Sourcing responsibly takes more time — but I stand by it.

Why We Prioritise GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton

Where possible, we stock GOTS-certified organic cotton.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is internationally recognised as the most rigorous organic textile certification. It goes far beyond farming practices to cover the entire manufacturing process — limiting toxic chemicals, ensuring fair working conditions, and upholding strict environmental standards.

For us, GOTS represents transparency, accountability and respect — for both people and the planet.

FSC Certification: An Honest View

When I first began researching certifications, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) stood out as a meaningful standard for responsible forest management. While I’m aware there are ongoing discussions and criticisms surrounding FSC, at this moment in time I believe it still offers clear benefits. Where paper-based materials are necessary, we favour FSC-certified options over non-certified alternatives.

Our Packaging Pledge

Packaging is one of my biggest bugbears.

We’ve all received parcels packed in oversized boxes and unnecessary plastic — and it just doesn’t sit right with me.

At Seb & I, I constantly ask: “Is this really necessary?”

Our gift boxes are intentionally simple, elegant and true to our ethos. I pledge to use only recycled and recyclable materials, including:

  • Brown paper boxes and paper wrap (no bleached white paper)

  • Brown paper tape

  • Natural jute twine and organic cotton ribbon

  • No printed invoices, to reduce waste

  • Plastic-free packaging throughout

Even our bunny tails are grown on a UK farm 🌾

Where possible, I also reuse clean packaging that comes into my home for non-gifting orders. If you ever receive a slightly unexpected box — that’s why! Throwing away perfectly reusable packaging simply doesn’t make sense.

And if you can reuse our boxes, tissue, ribbon or twine — we’d love that too.

An Honest Mum’s Promise

I’ll never claim to be perfect — and I’m certainly not an expert in climate science or sustainability. There will always be more to learn and room to improve. What I do promise is honesty, transparency, and a genuine commitment to doing better. Seb & I is rooted in care — for families, for our planet, and for making greener choices more accessible.

I’m just a mum of three, very much winging it, with a small dream to help make conscious living feel a little easier — and the reasons behind it better understood.

With love,
Rebecca x
